CANADA will present paintings by Jason Fox and Daniel Hesidence in a special curated section of Frieze New York dedicated to the legacy of the art dealer Hudson and his gallery Feature Inc. Hudson championed these two artists early on in their careers. He provided crucial support to Fox for nearly two decades starting in 1991. Hudson discovered the paintings of Daniel Hesidence while he was still at graduate school, giving him his first New York solo exhibition in 2002, and offering him encouragement at a seminal period in his unique practice.
Fox and Hesidence met while showing at Feature and this tribute to Hudson gives CANADA the opportunity to showcase their work together. Their studio dialogue and friendship has developed over the years, providing each artist with a sense of shared purpose.
Jason Fox presents several of his mid-'90's hybridized portrait paintings of mythic pop antiheroes, blending angst, acidic humor and comic terror. He plays with the vernaculars of analytic cubism, comic book draftsmanship and visionary notation.
Daniel Hesidence will present large-scale abstract paintings from his 1 7 7 9 / Pedestrians series. They are luminous explorations of pictorial space, meditations on power structures that possess the mystery and recurring inventiveness Hesidence is noted for. The paintings offer a counterpoint to Hesidence's solo show, PLACE HOLDERS, currently on view at CANADA.
