"Katherine Bernhardt: Francesco D’Angelo" published by Karma Books, New York

This book collects a series of new portraits by the critically acclaimed New York–based painter Katherine Bernhardt (born 1975). The drawings depict a man named Francesco D’Angelo, whom she met while traveling in Peru. The two began sending photos back and forth through WhatsApp of their daily lives.
The drawings are accompanied by a group of photo pairings that Bernhardt made of him, alongside other depictions of D’Angelo, as well as images found online that point to similarities between him and others (an image of Jesus in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, for example).

For Your Infotainment / Hudson and Feature Inc.
Jason Fox & Daniel Hesidence
curated section of Frieze New York
Randall's Island
May 2-6, 2018

CANADA will present paintings by Jason Fox and Daniel Hesidence in a special curated section of Frieze New York dedicated to the legacy of the art dealer Hudson and his gallery Feature Inc. Hudson championed these two artists early on in their careers. He provided crucial support to Fox for nearly two decades starting in 1991. Hudson discovered the paintings of Daniel Hesidence while he was still at graduate school, giving him his first New York solo exhibition in 2002, and offering him encouragement at a seminal period in his unique practice.

Fox and Hesidence met while showing at Feature and this tribute to Hudson gives CANADA the opportunity to showcase their work together. Their studio dialogue and friendship has developed over the years, providing each artist with a sense of shared purpose.

Jason Fox presents several of his mid-'90's hybridized portrait paintings of mythic pop antiheroes, blending angst, acidic humor and comic terror. He plays with the vernaculars of analytic cubism, comic book draftsmanship and visionary notation.

Daniel Hesidence will present large-scale abstract paintings from his 1 7 7 9 / Pedestrians series. They are luminous explorations of pictorial space, meditations on power structures that possess the mystery and recurring inventiveness Hesidence is noted for. The paintings offer a counterpoint to Hesidence's solo show, PLACE HOLDERS, currently on view at CANADA.

Island by Marc Hundley

Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, 12-8 PM
23 Washington Square North

Just in time for summer, Island, a debut series of furniture pieces by the multidisciplinary artist Marc Hundley, takes its cues from the modernist architecture of Fire Island’s local warm-weather enclaves. Hundley conceived of the collection's assortment of handcrafted lamps, chairs and tables last summer at an airy tree-covered residence in Water Island, a car-less community on the eastern part of Fire Island accessible only by boat, that once housed the American poet Frank O'Hara WH Auden and others. (The property is now owned by Hundley's close friend, Justinian Kfoury.)

Inspired by the region’s pristine remoteness, Hundley used rustic oak beachwood sourced from previous build-outs done on the house. “Getting building materials there isn't as simple or quick as it is in the city or main land,” he said. His use of found materials imbues the pieces with an arresting assemble-it-yourself quality that is both personal and utilitarian.

After his former studio mate, the abstract painter Matt Connors, gave him a book on the Italian architect Enzo Mari, Hundley begin incorporating Mari’s patchwork approach to furniture-making by cutting his repurposed wood slabs down to smaller piecemeal shapes to form intricate geometric trusses. Several of the furniture pieces incorporate colors found from the nearby beachscape, including pops of gas-can red, pebble black, turmeric-powder yellow and moss green. The top of one larger table is painted a deep blue hue that is meant to suggest a lagoon. An intentional use of exposed wood and concrete speaks to the works' rugged utility.

Back at his Brooklyn studio, Hundley continued to craft furniture with a hazy nostalgia for isolated island life. “I fantasized about an island a lot since between two summers the world seems to have gone mad,” he said. “I imagined being wrecked on some island far from the rest of the world, where I find some great empty abandoned house and use the wrecked wood to make it the nicest home for myself.”

In a fitting nod to the intimate nature of the series, the first survey of Hundley’s furniture pieces will be shown at Kfoury’s city apartment located in the heart of Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. “It’s a beautiful parlor-like space, but I’m replacing Justinian’s home contents with things I make,” he said. “It will be like my abandoned house on some secluded island somewhere.”

"You can hardly expect an enterprise whose philosphical underpinnings drew equally from Marx, Freud and Mao to play out in some tidy fashion. By adopting strategies of esthetic and political action, they were able to invest their work with conceptual rigor. The early explorations of the limits of materials, the liberating process of doing, the transgression of boundaries between the event and the public became situations where the works formed links with each other. Whenever the works confront each other affinities remain apparent."

Gerald Ferguson's Choral Reading
In 1972 Gerald Ferguson scored a reading of his Standard Corpus of Present Day English Language Usage Arranged By Word Length in 20 units for a chorus of 26 voices. It was performed at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design that same year.
Ferguson (1937-2009) published "The Standard Corpus of Present Day English Language Usage arranged by word length and alphabetized within word length" in a small edition of 300 copies in 1970. It represents the culmination of a series of conceptual artworks exploring the alphabet, which began in 1968. This series includes Ferguson's typewritten Alphabet Pages and stenciled Period or Dot Paintings. Together with the Corpus, they form an integral part of the canon of systemic and process art and stands alongside the most significant achievements of concrete poetry in Canada. Ferguson considered the Corpus one of his most important works, once describing it as "a variable serial sculpture through time".
The Choral Reading will be performed at CANADA on February 11th starting at 7pm and a reception will follow.
